FAQ
|
"NANDEMO HOSTING" is one of the oldest web hosting companies. We
provide the new hosting customer information that some hosting providers would
rather you not have.
Give us a contact if you have any questions that are
not listed here:
|
|
- Is your connection "multi homed"?
"NANDEMO HOSTING" utilizes multiple fiber carriers like
Verio, Quest, Cogent and more to ensure that our connectivity does
not go down. Ask your new host who their carriers are and what speed
of connection they have.
- Do you have backup hardware on location in case of failures?
"NANDEMO HOSTING" has at our location backup switches,
rebooters, harddrives, complete servers and Router cards in case of
failure.
- Does the transfer of files to the server from FTP count against
my website transfer?
"NANDEMO HOSTING" does not count FTP transfer in your
bill. We do however limit logins to 4 connections at one time to
prevent overload on our servers, this can be lifted on dedicated
servers.
- Do you provide a way to limit the amount of transfer I have on
my website?
"NANDEMO HOSTING" does have "throttling" ability
down to individual IP level. Many high volume website owners love
this feature as it enables a customer to control a sites usage,
while allowing others they own full reign on speed. Please call if
you have questions about this feature, its important to understand
why this is usefull.
- Can I put multiple domains on a single plan?
"NANDEMO HOSTING" does allow for that, currently our Plan
A allows for 20 domains and more on higher plans.
- What amount of bandwidth can I use in a month?
"NANDEMO HOSTING" is not what we call a "channel
host". We do not try to fit our customers into a specified data
pipe like 128K, there are many problems with this. All adult sites
peak during the USA night and then go way back down in the day. When
you have to purchase a specifed channel like 128K your site will
"top out" and slow to a crawl preventing users from
accessing your site. This will force you into a bigger plan then you
really need. We allow a customer to burst into 3 times their plan
size and more upon request. This is the best option for any
customer.
- Do you limit us on the space we can use?
Many hosts use a quota system that prevents a user from uploading
past their requested amount on the customers plan size. The problem
with a host doing this is that it could effect your site adversely
with cgi scripts and paysite scripts. An example would be a paysite
that no longer had space left and was trying to write to the
password file, this would 0kb the file and prevent ALL users from
getting into your paysite. Chargebacks would occur and merchant
accounts could be lost, we prefer to monitor our servers and inform
the customers that have gone over their allotment. This is the best
way.
- Does your company provide any way I can protect my files from
being hotlinked?
This is very handy script that many providers don't use. It prevents
other webmasters from hotlinking your images on your site.
Hotlinking is when someone makes a direct call to your image from
their site, this makes your bandwidth bill go up and you don't make
a cent off of it! We provide a file that goes in the image directory
and makes it so the hotlinker when they click on your image they get
your front page, very effective!
- When you register my domain will you make me the Registrant,
Administrator and Billing Contact?
A common practice by some unsavory providers is to make the hosting
company the Administrator Contact, the customer the Billing and No
Technical contact. This way if you want to leave it will be more
difficult and usually require a fax to Internic to make the site
transfer. Always make sure you "hold" the Administrator
and Billing and the provider only holds the "Technical".
This will make for smooth switchovers if you have to leave. ("NANDEMO
HOSTING" does) Not sure how to check to see who actually holds
these contacts? Try typing in your domain here or you can download
this nifty program here called Netlab that will allow you to check
DNS, WHOIS, Ping and other goodies.
- Does the provider have the ability to provide a "404 error
file"?
This is a great way of preventing lost hits. With a 404 error file
if anyone goes to a page that does not exist on the site anymore you
can make a custom HTM page for it. You can put banners or just a
meta refresh to your main page. If you already have a existing page
chances are you are getting 404 errors. Many providers actually put
their own page for a 404 error, this generates HUGE traffic for
them. In our eyes though this is the clients traffic. ("NANDEMO
HOSTING" does)
- What kind of stats will the provider have for you?
We use a program called Wusage on our Unix boxes and NT boxes. They
provide unique referrers and total bandwidth used for the day.
- Do you put my log files in the space that I have for my site?
No log files are kept in a separate location, so when you have
200MB...you will have 200MB of space.
- How much bandwidth can I use in a month, do you have any
throttles on the site?
We do throttle the site at 3 times the plan size mainly for your
protection, if you need more bandwidth just let us know.. but watch
your overages. It is a common practice for many adult hosting
providers to give you a certain "channel" of bandwidth.
This is not a good idea, websites need to burst at night then during
the day time they will drop down again. A channel host is going to
end up charging you more then a host that charges per Gig. Please
call us if you are shopping so we can compare apples to apples.
- Do you charge extra to install any modules I may need, like
libwww perl?
No we do not charge for typical module installs, it is our desire to
be a fully managed solution with very few hidden costs.
- What about space usage, if I upload 310MB what happens?
We do not limit the usage, rather we run reports. If you have gone
over we will charge you for the month at $25 per 100 extra MB, if
you are unsure. how much space you are currently using please submit
a support ticket on our help desk and request we check out your
usage.
- Will I get my own individual IP?
Many providers are selling off virtual domains and nesting them from
one IP. Now this in general is not bad, but you should know that
some search engines and some browsers will only be able to see the
Mother IP. Generally these types of domains are cheaper. We make
deals with our current customers interested in increasing their
search engine exposure but still really just maintaining one main
site. We charge per extra IP's, we call this a Plan J. All Plan A's
and above get their own IP.
- Does the provider provide a private cgi-bin?
This is only important if you plan on having custom scripts written
for you. We provide this to our customers. ("NANDEMO
HOSTING" does)
- What kind of promotion tools can the provider offer to you to
help you get some hits?
Many providers will run your site through a search engine submission
tool to help promote the site. "NANDEMO HOSTING" will do
this upon request.
- Can your servers support me if I choose to have a pay site?
"NANDEMO HOSTING" works with all the major On Line Credit
Card Services such as Ibill. For a complete list refer to Ynot.
- How long will it take to have my site on-line?
Some hosting providers can take up to a week to get your site
registered and give you FTP access. At "NANDEMO HOSTING"
we strive to give people same day access, processing orders as late
as 3:00pm PST.
- Does the hosting provider offer a 7 day money back guarantee?
Most providers will do that upon request, its nice to find a
provider that specifies it. ("NANDEMO HOSTING" does)
- What Operating System does the hosting company provide?
My personal opinion is to go with a Unix derivative box (Linux, Free
BSD, Sun). This will enable you to run really cool scripts when you
get savvy enough. They are also WAY more reliable.
- Where are you physically located? Do you run your own network
operation facilities or do you co-locate your servers with another
company's Network Operations Center?
We have locations in SF and Philadelphia and L.A, we have our own
cages and racks and contracts in carrier neutral facilities.
- What internet connection do you have and how is it configured?
What Carriers do you use and what is the speed of the connection? Do
you use load balancing? Do you use a switched network or routed
network?
We have 1 Gig ethernet contracts that are BGP and multihomed with
over 4 other carrires.
- How is payment made and when? Is payment required in advance or
at the end of the month and when is payment due?
In advanced on the 1st
- What about .info .biz domains etc. Any problems with hosting
these?
No problem with hosting any .new extensions
- Will I receive a discount for paying in advance?
Yes if you pay 6 months in advance we will give you 1 month free, 12
months paid in advanced gets you 2 months free.
- Do you currently make the customer commit to any contract term?
No currently we are month to month unless the customer wants to
initiate a contract.
